Convoy of Hope Fundraiser for January!





Convoy of Hope Fundraiser
Cherokee Middle School is going to be putting on a Penny Drive and donating all the money collected to Convoy of Hope. The money raised will help aid Convoy of Hope in its objective of meeting the needs of survivors OF Hurricane Sandy in New York and New Jersey. If any money is not used it will be put toward the funds of the next major disaster by going to the General Fund of Convoy of Hope. We will accept other things than just pennies including dollar bills.

Dates:  January 2-31
Donations Drop-off: Lunch time
Thank you for helping Convoy of Hope raise money for the survivors of Hurricane Sandy.

Week of December 17-20

Well, our Christmas break is upon us...just 4 more days! Yeehaw! I know we are all ready:)
We need to finish strong this week and get all missing assignments in so our grades will be the best for this second quarter.

This week in social studies:
Monday:  Meet in Library lab for a Japanese webquest.
Tuesday:  Japan Geography Challenge. We will work on our Japan maps.
Wednesday:  Complete our maps and guided notes for Japan.
Thursday:  Changed schedule. Holiday activities.
 Talent show in the afternoon!

Food Harvest Food Drive this week!!
Please bring your food items to your 4th hour teacher.  The class that has the most items brought will receive an Andy's Frozen Custard! Thank you.

This week in Social Studies:
Monday:  We will read Ch. 7, Lesson 1 in our text and complete a guided reading chart with questions.  Complete for homework if not completed in class.
Tuesday:  China: From Past to Present Discovery Streaming Video.  Quick Write/Quick Draw summary assignment.
Wednesday:  Character Ed 1st hour.  We will complete our notes on China.  Students will be assigned vocabulary choice boards.  No homework.
Thursday:  We will summarize how the Mongols changed Chinese government and expanded trade by using alpha boxes and word chains. Homework if not completed in class.
Friday:  Current event presentations. We will conclude our studies of China by completing Ch. 7, Lesson 4 in our textbook and reviewing all dynasties.

Monday:  We will begin our studies of China with the geography challenge.  It will be homework if not completed in class. China Map Test on Friday.

Wednesday:  Background information given on China.  Students will take notes and complete a guided reading assignment.  
Thursday:  Library classroom/lab to complete our learning about plagiarism.
Friday:  China Map test.  Current event presentations.

DANCE FRIDAY NIGHT!

● Tickets will be sold Monday, Nov. 12 through Wednesday, Nov. 14 during lunch.
There will be NO ticket sales at the door. Students may not buy a ticket from another
student.
● Students must be in attendance the ENTIRE day of the dance in order to attend that
night. Any exceptions to this must be approved by Mr. Powers or Mr. Groves.
● Student attire must be in accordance with the school dress code.
● After entering the building, students are to stay inside until they are ready to leave.
● Loud noises (screaming) and running are NOT proper behaviors for a dance.
● Food and drinks are to be consumed in the proper areas and all litter put in trash cans.
● Decorations should be left alone until the dance is over.
● Only Cherokee Middle School students may attend the dance/activity.
● No chants will be allowed.
● Student behavior during the dance/activity must remain appropriate for a school function.
● No inappropriate “public displays of affection” will be tolerated.
● Students are to be dropped off and picked up at the athletic/west parking area.
● Students must be picked up on time (15 minutes after dismissal) or they will not be
allowed to attend the next dance.

HOMEWORK:  Begin studying for test.  Magnet Summary over article on the Collapse of Mali and Songhai (on Edmodo or paper copy).
TuesdayAnalyze the Bantu-migrations, by completing a team Travel Guide. 
HOMEWORK:  Define/identify all terms for African Unit Test.
WednesdayStudents will trace the development of the Shona and Mutapa Empires by completing a guided reading template looking for main ideas and details.
HOMEWORK:  Study for test on Monday.
ThursdayAnalyze the Kongo Kingdom through oral reading and class discussion.
We will review all terms for test.

Progress Report Alert!

Progress Reports go out today, November 9th.
Parents, please sign your child's report and return them by Monday.
NOTE:   Due to time spent on the DBQ Essay in class, there were only 4 grades on this report.  If your child was missing an assignment or did poorly on the Africa Map Quiz, their grade will reflect that.  Students were given an opportunity to attend a working lunch to make up missing work.  All work was due by Wednesday morning before 8:00 am.

This week in Social Studies:

Monday:  Students will use the Salt Trade theme sets to present learned concepts over their assigned section to teach their classmates the material. Homework:  The Empire of Ghana questions. (On Edmodo too)
Tuesday:  Students will write a summary over an article in the Jr. Scholastic magazine entitled, " Trouble in Timbuktu".  Homework:  Election Activity
Wednesday:  (Character Ed 1st hour) We will analyze the West African Kingdom of Mali and Songhai, completing all notes.
Thursday:  Counselor Visit
Friday:  Current event presentations.  Begin our Analysis of the Central and Southern African kingdoms: Great Zimbabwe, the Mutapa, and Kongo Kingdoms.

This week in Social Studies:

Monday:  Self-evaluate your DBQ essay by using a reflection guide and a self-evaluation rubric.
Tuesday:  Kid VOTE today!!  We will be going to the library computer lab to learn about different search engines and how to apply proper search techniques for research.
Wednesday:  We will analyze west African culture and the salt trade by using the National Geographic theme sets as a resource.  Also complete Edmodo assignment:  West African Culture and Daily Life questions.
Thursday:  Write a magnet summary using the article, "Trouble in Timbuktu" from the Jr. Scholastic magazine dated October 1, 2012.
Friday:  NO SCHOOL!

Honoring Veterans and Active Military



Cherokee Middle School is creating a "Wall of Honor" to recognize our family members and friends who have sacrificed by serving in one of the branches of the U.S. military service.  The honorees may be active duty military, past military, or those who are deceased but served in the military during their lifetime. We ask that you send a picture and the following information:

Branch of Service and job
Dates of Service and what war (if applicable)

We will begin hanging the pictures at the end of this week, so the sooner you can get these pictures to us the better. :)  Please make a copy of pictures since these will be hanging in the hallway and could have a chance of falling off.  Thank you SO much for helping Cherokee recognize the tremendous sacrifice made by all military personnel and their families.

Week of Oct. 8-12

Unit 2 Test on MONDAY!

This week in Social Studies: We are beginning our first semester DBQ Essay. All document analysis and writing will take place during class.  The students will be given two computer lab days to type the essay on October 22nd and 23rd.  Essays will be due on Wednesday, October 24th.  Students will also be allowed to work ahead on our next unit of study, African Kingdoms.  New assignments will be uploaded to Edmodo.

Monday:  Unit 2 Test over Islam. Begin the DBQ essay, "Why did Islam Spread?" Hook/background/thesis.
Tuesday:  Background essay discussion.  Practice finding specific information for document analysis. Analyze document A and B.
Wednesday:  Document C and D analysis.
Thursday:  FIELD TRIP TO LEADERSHIP RANCH! Bring a sack lunch and wear jackets/tennis shoes.
Friday:  Current Event presentations.  Document E analysis.

Monday:  Summarize the life and teaching of Muhammad.  Students completed a KWL for note-taking.
Tuesday:  Arabian Peninsula quiz (done on Edmodo or paper).  PPT. with notes taken in class to complete our Monday objective.
Wednesday:  Describe the role of Islamic leaders in the spread of Islam through generative reading, as well as Professor Know It All strategies. 
Thursday:  Analyze the 5 Pillars of Islam, and  then create the 5 Pillars of Islam artwork.  
Friday:  Review for Unit 2 test on Monday.  Current event presentations.

Monday:  Students are comparing the steps taken by archaeologists to uncover evidence from the past. They will use inquiry skills and complete a note-taking template.
Homework: Interview an adult about 9/11.  
UNIT ONE TEST on THURSDAY.  STUDY!!

Tuesday:  9/11 activities and share interviews.

Wednesday:  Study guide questions - work on them in class and review for test.

Thursday:  Unit one test

Friday:  Leadership Ranch field trip from 9-1:00.  Pep Assembly when we return to school.

Week of September 4-7

Hope everyone enjoyed the LONG weekend. It was great having a day to work and learn at school on Friday, as well as a long weekend for myself!

Tuesday:  Chapter 1 vocabulary quiz (was postponed from last Thursday).
Review the 5 themes of geography, student collaboration activity.  Homework due Friday:  Describe Springfield using the 5 themes.  Refer to notes as needed.

Wednesday:  Analyze culture of different countries using the Material World posters.  Students will rotate stations to assess material.

Thursday: Complete rotation process.

Friday:  Current event presentations.  We will compare the steps taken by archaeologists to uncover evidence from the past. Cornell notes done in class.

Week of August 27-31

I believe students are enjoying using Edmodo. I LOVE it!  So far we have done most of our work online. The world maps were due Friday.  Intro to geography using the textbook was due today (Monday).  I have been at home with a sick child, and will be out tomorrow as well.

This week in Social Studies:
Monday:  Students defined all of Chapter 1 vocabulary and should have made flash cards to study for the quiz.  Quiz on Thursday!

Tuesday:  Students will use Jr. Scholastic magazines for current event articles.  They will read an article of their choosing and write a short summary.

Wednesday:  5 Themes of geography review.  Culture posters will be used in class to determine each of the 5 themes geographers use to study the earth.

Thursday:  Vocabulary quiz. Primary and secondary sources will be discussed with a culminating class activity to practice.

Friday:  NO SCHOOL! Enjoy your long weekend:)

We are off to a great start! The students are already working hard and collaborating together.  If you have not joined Edmodo. com, please do so as soon as you can. It is a secure site for our class and allows the students to work at their own pace and collaborate together outside of school. We are a learning COMMUNITY together!

This week in social studies:
Monday:  Create a Life Map with drawn pictures or pictures from home. DUE WEDNESAY.
Homework:  Write a summary of Mrs. Mooney's procedures in your own words.

Tuesday:  Complete Life Maps in class, share one event from your life. Begin introduction to geography using the textbook (this is online as well).
Homework:  Life Maps due tomorrow.

Wednesday:  World Map Activity

First week of school! August 15-17

We made it through the first day!  It went great and hopefully all the students had an awesome first day of school!
The week in Social Studies:

Wednesday:  Students will be introduced to 7th grade expectations, and participate in activities to meet new friends. Homework:  All forms were sent home to be completed by parents/guardians and are due by Monday, August 20th.

Thursday:  Students will learn about classroom procedures and get an overview of what they will learn this year. Homework: Visit my blog, email or write a note letting me know you visited!

Friday:  Guidelines for Life Maps will be given out.  Students are to find pictures or print digital pictures that depict different events during their lifetime.  We will be creating timelines in class, and working on the project here at school.

Happy Summer!

It's finally here...summer! I always look forward to the lazy days of summer. Sleeping in, at least till 7:00, doing whatever I want to with no agenda, and enjoying good books to read. I especially love the time with family. My husband and I will be going to Hawaii in July...can't wait to see all the beauty of nature! I always miss seeing the students during summer, and I look forward to meeting the new students in the fall. I hope and pray you have a safe and blessed summer! See you in August. Remember to READ!!

MONDAY:  We will learn about the Incas.  Students will complete Inca questions using a ppt and their textbook as resources.
TUESDAY:  Review for Mesoamerica Unit Test.
WEDNESDAY:  Mesoamerica Test
THURSDAY:  Evaluate the Age of Enlightenment and the ideas through text reading and discussion.
FRIDAY:  Check Daily Geo for the week, current event presentations, and finish the Enlightenment time period.

THURSDAY:  Read in textbook Chapter 11, lesson 3 (pgs. 380-386). Complete questions.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Dear Cherokee Families, Missouri Law requires all incoming 8th graders to have a Tdap vaccine unless they have received a Td booster within the last 2 years. For your convenience a FREE immunization clinic will be held at Cherokee on Friday, May 4. To participate in this free clinic you must bring in the letter you received earlier this week along with your immunization record and the signed consent form to our nurse by Thursday, May 3. If you have already received the Tdap or booster shot please make sure we have a copy of that record here at school. Students will NOT receive their 8th grade schedule until we have record of the Tdap or booster on file in our office. If you have any questions please call Nurse Van Someren at 523-7200. Thank you,

Week of April 9-13

Hello! This week I, Mr. Tyson will be teaching the unit of Scientific Revolution. I moved into Mrs. Mooney's class about 4 weeks ago from Mrs. Merrigan's classroom. I will be in Mrs. Mooney's class for another 4 weeks before leaving and graduating! The week goes as follows.

Monday: Had a brief powerpoint overview of the Scientific Revolution, no homework.
Tuesday: Students' will be doing a guided reading assignment with their textbooks, any work not finished by the end of the period is homework.
Wednesday: We will being doing a reading strategy on Galileo and his life, students may have to do some reading at home.
Thursday: Finish up Galileo reading discussion and move onto scientist research, no homework.
Friday: We will be in the computer lab doing research on the Scientific Revolution scientist, students may have some research to do at home.

Week of April 2-6

Happy Monday! Hope everyone had a relaxing weekend. We are getting geared up for Map Testing which starts tomorrow, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Make every effort to have your child in school. Encourage them to get plenty of rest and eat breakfast before they come. We will offer a light snack, but they need to bring their own drinks.

This week in Social Studies:
MONDAY: Computer Lab - research famous people of the Reformation and write descriptive paragraphs for each of the 6 people.
TUESDAY: Map testing in the morning. We will begin the movie "Luther" in class.
WEDNESDAY: Map testing in the morning. Complete the movie "Luther".
THURSDAY: OPEN BOOK test over the Renaissance and Reformation.
FRIDAY: Grade tests, check Daily Geo for the week, and current event presentations.

THURSDAY: Martin Luther article and questions. Design Martin Luther's Seal.
FRIDAY: Current events presentations. Check Daily Geo for the week.

TUESDAY: Go over guided essay and begin to write rough draft for essay. Peer edit when complete. ALL ESSAYS DUE MONDAY, MARCH 12TH!
WEDNESDAY: Trade Across Time and Cultures theme sets: Silk, Fur, Salt, and Spices. Students will complete a definition chart and the comprehension strategy: Synthesizing.
THURSDAY: Share learning by expert groups, and complete chart.
FRIDAY: Current Event presentations. Open book test for theme sets.

Monday: Medieval Europe Test (Turn in signed study guides)
Tuesday: Introduce DBQ (data based question). Read and discuss background essay. The students will begin their work on the second semester DBQ ~ Samurai and Knights: Were the Similarities Greater Than the Differences?
Wednesday: Pre-bucketing using clues from the Mini-Q question, students will create analytical categories and label the buckets for the written essay.
Thursday: Document Analysis based on social order of Japan and Europe.
Friday: Grade geo for the week, current event presentations. Continue to analyze documents.

We are at mid 3rd quarter and a grade check will be coming home this week. Please continue to work hard and keep those good grades up!!

This week in Social Studies:
TUESDAY: Complete 6 square foldable for the Crusades (Ch. 10, Lesson 2)
WEDNESDAY: Read Ch. 10, Lesson 3 in text, and complete reading study guides. HOMEWORK: Begin to study for the Medieval Europe Unit Test.
THURSDAY: Review for test, study guide questions assigned. Get the study guide signed by a parent for 3 extra points on the test!
FRIDAY: Current event presentations. Review game for test on Monday.

Week of Feb. 6-10

This week in Social Studies:

MONDAY: Coat of Arms due. Fill in the blank notes - Steps to becoming a knight. Guiding reading questions over Ch. 9, Lesson 1
TUESDAY: Jr. Scholastic article: "Life in the Middle Ages". Write an essay explaining the differences between Peter (a serf's child) and Mary (a lord's child).
WEDNESDAY: Ch. 9, Lesson 2 guided reading questions.
THURSDAY: Middle Ages dramatization. Homework: STUDY for Europe map re-takes.
FRIDAY: Europe Map test retakes. Current Event presentations. Grade Geo for the week.

Week of 1/30 - 2/3

We split the Western Europe Map into two parts, political and physical. Students should have studied over the weekend.

This week in social studies:
MONDAY: Physical Map of Europe test, current event presentations. Homework: complete all vocabulary for Ch. 9.
TUESDAY: Knights and Knighthood information and questions with PPT. Coat of arms due Wednesday.
WEDNESDAY: Teacher directed notes, and guided reading questions.
THURSDAY: Ch. 9, Lesson 2 guided reading discussion and questions.
FRIDAY: Current event presentations. Lesson 3 read for important information. Vocabulary quiz.
